Minimize Conveyor Belt Top Cover Abrasion

Strategies to Prevent Top Cover Abrasion on Conveyor Belts

Sometimes, distinguishing between normal wear and preventable belt damage can be less than obvious. One of the most frequent types of damage to conveyor belts, and one that can be anticipated, is gradual wear on the top cover. This wear occurs primarily due to the abrasion from materials loaded onto the conveyor belt, compounded by the pressure from containers with heavier head loads.

Initially, these stresses may seem inherent to regular operations. However, closer examination often reveals several opportunities to minimize top cover abrasion.

  • Proper Installation of Belt Cleaners: Ensure that belt cleaners are correctly installed and adjusted to prevent chattering, which can lead to excessive wear on the top cover.

  • Effective Maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain belt cleaners to ensure they are functioning optimally and replace them when necessary to prevent buildup of fugitive materials.

  • Optimized Loading Practices: Implement proper loading techniques to reduce impact and abrasion on the belt. This includes controlling the flow of materials onto the conveyor and reducing the head load on the belt.

  • Use of Impact Beds or Skirting: Install impact beds or skirting along the conveyor system to absorb impact and minimize direct contact between materials and the belt surface.

  • Material Selection: Choose conveyor belts with top covers made from durable materials that are resistant to abrasion, depending on the specific application and material being conveyed.

  • Regular Inspections: Conduct routine inspections of the conveyor system to identify potential sources of abrasion and address them promptly to prevent further damage.
