Do You Know The Most Common Form Of Conveyor Belt Damage?

Understanding Impact Damage: Causes, Consequences, and Prevention Strategies

0412H-1One of the most common forms of damage to conveyor belts is also one of the simplest: impact damage. This occurs when materials strike the top belt with enough force to scratch or puncture it. Impact damage is particularly concerning when heavy, sharp objects, such as raw materials like coal and ore, especially straight from the mine or after passing through a crusher, are involved. However, even lighter and less sharp materials can cause significant damage if they have enough energy behind them.

Impact damage is often seen as a type of "normal wear and tear," as regular use inevitably leads to some degree of belt scarring over time. However, given the high cost of replacing a conveyor belt, it's important to analyze potential sources of preventable damage.

When it comes to impact damage, long drops can be a major cause of preventable damage. Steps can often be taken to cushion falling materials or redirect their energy away from the belt itself. While it may be challenging to eliminate all instances of sharp impacts, businesses can at least reduce the likelihood that materials will completely tear through the belt.
